The FMB doesn’t let just anyone in. Members are independently vetted and inspected before they can join, and held to a written Code of Practice after. Here’s what that means for you.
Why it matters
Anyone can call themselves a builder. Far fewer can prove someone independent has checked their work.
The Federation of Master Builders is the UK’s largest trade association for building firms, and has been vetting its members since 1941. Being accepted means our references, our finances and the standard of our finished work were examined before we were allowed to display the logo, and that we agree to be held to account for how we treat you.
What FMB membership gives you
Four things a non-member can’t offer.
Independently vetted & inspected
You cannot simply pay to join the FMB. Before a builder is accepted, the FMB independently checks their references, financial standing and the quality of their completed work. Membership is a mark of a builder who has been examined by someone other than themselves.
Held to a Code of Practice
Every FMB member agrees to the FMB Code of Practice, which sets standards for how members quote, communicate, carry out work and treat customers. It is a written standard we can be held to, not a slogan.
Free, independent dispute resolution
If a disagreement ever arises that we cannot settle between us, the FMB offers a free, independent dispute resolution service. It means you are not on your own, and it keeps everyone honest.
Insurance-backed warranties available
As FMB members we can offer insurance-backed warranties on our work, so your project stays protected even in the unlikely event the business could not honour it. Ask us about this at the quoting stage.

The FMB is the largest trade association for the UK construction industry, established in 1941. It represents small and medium-sized building firms, and members must be independently vetted and inspected before they can join. It exists to protect both builders and the homeowners who hire them.
Use the free "Find a Builder" directory on fmb.org.uk. Only builders who have passed the FMB’s independent vetting appear there and are entitled to display the FMB logo. If a builder claims FMB membership but isn’t in the directory, treat the claim with caution.
Three things beyond a normal builder: members are held to the FMB Code of Practice; the FMB provides a free, independent dispute resolution service if a disagreement can’t be settled; and FMB members can offer insurance-backed warranties so your project stays protected even if the business couldn’t honour it.
No, and that’s the point. Builders have to apply and pass independent vetting, including an inspection of their work and checks on their references and finances. It’s a smaller, checked group, which is exactly why the logo carries weight.
